Press Release- MUN YA 2017- DAY 3- Committee 5
24 August, 2017- First session in the second day of Committee 5’s discussions started by delegates building up on the clauses prepared in the previous meeting. The resolution is taking shape to address some of the most important topics in the Assembly, regarding youth development and employability through the prism of Model UN.
News is that Committees 5 and 6 are merging their resolutions into one great collaborative document. Yesterday, what seemed like a possible problem ended up becoming a positive advance towards the success of the Assembly, as the representants now discuss the contact points between Committee 5’s exposed topics and the equally relevant subject discussed by committee 6: the MUN reform, encompassing Multilingualism, UN4MUN and alternatives to the traditional Model structures.
While one might think that these themes are apart, reality shows how commonalities are evident. Since the beginning of the debates, it was observed that much of the potential that MUN have to develop skills and character are related to the way Model UN are organized. Therefore, the shift from pure competitiveness to the most consensus-driven type of meetings, which can improve the way the young develop both leadership and teamwork abilities, are completely in sync with the topic of MUN reform and how can Model UN be more relevant in society.
Therefore, the merging of the resolutions is being a fruitful measure for both committees. In the morning, the tabled resolution was already addressing some very contemporary issues. Accessibility remained a central topic, as the document stated the representants’ will to ensure inclusivity and proposed programs like online participation, financial aid for people without enough economic resources and the production of adequate structure to people with disabilities.
Considering the significance of the content and the values disseminated in the conferences, the delegates also decided to advertise and raise awareness over the principles and purposes of Model UN, as well as attracting attention to organizations with these guiding precepts, such as United Ambassadors itself. The resolution also highlighted the need to stimulate cooperation between delegates in MUN conferences, but didn’t fail to recognize the importance of awards and healthy competition in the world of Modeling.
Latest sessions were marked by Line by Line Review, where delegates go through which clause expressing their accordance or disagreement, and by the shift back to informal debating, where delegates could settle their differences and get to a final understanding.
In the final session, delegates were able to successfully reach consensus, once again fulfilling the goal of cooperation over individuality, bringing together 31 preambular and 25 operative clauses that declared their support and proposals on a great variety of subjects, such as accessibility, multilingualism, award systems, fundraising, UN4MUN propagation, UN simulation accuracy and MUN administration.
Cooperation was the key, as representants managed to finish their work with a sense of plenitude, in the certainty that the Resolution was not only applicable, but contemplated every single delegate in the committee.
